 1 member likes this. Hi,i just bought a vintage sewing machine & i can't seem to find the manufacturer of it. It says kerlick on the machine, the manual says super zig zag model 742 and the serial number is 5804. I've searched everywhere for "Kerlick" info & gotten nothing! Someone please help, the manual says it's printed in Japan,i just want to get info on my machine, anyone know how i can identify my machine? |

I'm thinking the next one would be 742. I think.
If it is one of these machine's It probley made by japan. they are good machines. ------

2 members like this. I guess some of us are more curious about the history of our machines. I am one of those that like to know the story of how it came about.
Its like inheriting a quilt. I do enjoy that it is functional but I also like to know who made it and that always leads to more questions about that person. But then I'm a history nut. ------

I learned here on PR some of these japanese-made machines carried lots of different off-beat names even tho the same machine was made under Brother or some other label... and often it was for department stores...sorry can't think of an example now but i wonder if there was once a large dept store called Kerlicks? This could explain the name. I sometimes see machines that look like the one pictured in this area of texas with "Carl's" on the front. I'm not sure, but I think Carl's was a department store here back in the day. |

Date: 3/18/13 8:41 AM This one stumped me too. and I thought I had seen all the machines.. in fact. thought I owned them all..  If I had that machine I would def be turning to the boards just to find out where it came from and why it had such a strange name.. don't think the manual would have that info..
I think you are right sewfrequent.. I bet it was made for a department store by that name.. |

I did a search under Kerlick. your question came up on a yahoo search.. but other ref did too.. there is someone on CL somewhere that has one for sale.. been in their family for years.. Maybe you could email them and ask about what they know.. or do other searches. Good luck |

Date: 3/18/13 9:26 AM Just a guess, but probably Kerlick is a dealer somewhere that ordered these Japanese machines branded in his name - that happened a lot! This machine sure is cute and has a funky look that is so cool!Enjoy and let us know how it sews for you!
