Date: 3/18/13 3:50 PM Hi everyone!
I want to sew a light summer skirt, but from what I've read, chiffon (although the best!) is very difficult to sew and I do not believe I've reached that level of expertise yet. So what else can I use? I have used silk before but it is a little expensive for me (tight budget, I am only 15 haha). What are your favorite fabrics that look good? Is jersey a good idea for a skirt? ------

 1 member likes this. Jersey is fine for a skirt; most of my favorite summer dresses are jersey material. Stretch fabric can be a challenge for beginners, but I started with it and I love it, haha. I would also consider a lightweight linen or plain ole' cotton (although you may want to double layer the cotton if it is see through at all.) ------

Date: 3/18/13 6:15 PM Not all cotton is stiff, for example voile is quite flowy, so you just need to look at the drape and find one that matches the pattern you want to use. For example, if you want a structured a-line, a stiffer cotton or drill wuld work well (what Burda calls fabric with some body), but if you want a flippy skirt, you need something lighter that moves more.

1 member likes this. How about crinkle cotton, eyelet or gauze? They are all pretty soft. You can make an A-line cut on the bias out of sturdier cotton or linen. A cute knit print would work with an elastic waist. Good luck! Glad to see a young person wanting to sew. That's when I started, so I have 50 years on you! Let us know what you decide on...... |

Date: 3/18/13 7:02 PM Chiffon is not a good choice for an everyday summer skirt anyway. I'd go with cotton lawn, cotton voile, or a cotton silk blend in those weaves. These would need to be lined and cotton batiste is a good choice. Cool and comfortable. If you don't want to line it look for a bottom weight cotton, or a cotton lycra. Linen is also nice or a linen rayon blend. All of the above except for the linen which is generally more common in solid colors, come in beautiful prints. If you don't have much of a choice where you are my favorite online sellers are, in order of preference, emmaonesock, Mood, Marcy Tilton, though I find her a bit more expensive than the first two. Manhattan fabrics is having a sale right now and they have good quality and value, especially on sale. ------

1 member likes this. I like I also like cotton or rayon. f you have a fabric store, be sure to unwrap about a yard of fabric that you are considering and check how it drapes. To further complicate things, some fabrics have sizing in it and will soften when that stuff is washed out. |

If you are look,ing for inexpensive fabric try Fashion Fabrics club.I bought what they called cotton sateen lawn on sale for $3.95.I made a soft pleated skirt for my grand daughter that she's stlll wearing 2yrs later. They have sales all the time but its a little hard to figure out what they call things.If you see something that looks nice type in that term on the computer to see what the definition is. Another great skirt fabric is cotton with Batik print.Look at Batiks ect. Its modern sometimes artsy color but not like little flowers more random or sponged. spattered Good for you to be making your summer clothes |

My definition is anything that doesnt wrinkle because if I hace to iron it, it wont get worn. If lightweight is the only criteria, Id go for some lightweight linen or blends, if budget is tight. It keeps you cool and is very classy looking.
