As a rule, I wash and dry any flannel that I sew with prior to beginning. Yes I would pre-shrink flannel before embroidering on it.

Honestly, flannel shrinks so much that I feel better if I wash and dry it first.

Another question -how do you wash your fabric? Do you use cold, warm or hot water? How about drying?

I wash warm and dry on medium. I don't use hot water just because I do not want a fading issue. I would assume drying on high would help to preshrink but I still just use medium. I have done appliqued flannel baby blankets and have seen pics of them after multiple washings and they look good yet.

The flannel you are going to embroider on I would prewash first because it will shrink and pucker the embroidery. Usually with rag quilts I do not prewash the fabric as you want the fabric to rag out once the quilt is done and you wash it. Doing embroidery on the squares changes things a bit. Good luck with your rag quilting!

But I think that if you are going to wash the squares you embroider on, you must wash all of them. Once it is made, you want all squares to shrink at the same rate. If you only preshrink the ones embroidered on the others will shrink at an uneven rate upon washing the finished item.

With all this talk of a flannel rag quilt, I think I will make one. I have alot of flannel I bought when on sale and I think that would be a good way to use it up.
