Hi all,
I searched the boards but cannot find the answer.
I am thinking about making a swimsuit that has a white panel across the front. However, I am unsure what color to use to line the white part. I have white swim lining, and nude swim lining, but thought I remembered somebody somewhere recommending lilac or light blue lining for the white, to help it be less see-through. Can anybody confirm or deny this? I cannot for the life of me find the reference.
Thanks in advance for any and all help,
judy

There was an article in Threads about using "nude" lining in light colored clothing (instead of white) not just for opacity, but because it better conceals things like seams, pockets (not that you'll have those in a swimsuit, but still!), etc. They used semi-sheer yellow linen pants as an example, and the difference between the white and nude was marked. I have also noticed the same thing with camis & bras and white tops.

They did not go into whether your "nude" lining should resemble your own nude skin tone... but perhaps that was the reason for the lilac or pale blue? For those with either a much darker or much lighter skin tone than the lining?

I'm interested to hear the reasoning!

Sorry, I'm not sure either though I know I've read about this too. I suggest you wrap a layer of each lining around yourself (so you've got two stripes, stretched like they would be in a completed swimsuit), then a layer of the white, wet it under the shower and look in a good (well lit) mirror. Should give you some idea of the coverage properties :-)

For most suits, nude is the best, but for white and yellow I read an article that said pale blue is the best. The article was about making swimwear for synchronized swimmers. Don't use white, white on white is see through.

As a retired RN, I usually wore white uniforms and always wore beige underwear-one never saw the items.

I would line it with a skin tone close to your own. And I suggest you audition your fabrics WET, as they change opacity once soaked. The pale blue is a very interesting idea. Wonder if it somehow works with the florescent lighting of indoor pools?

Definitely a flesh-tone lining.
