I bought New Look 6531 (bias evening dress) but it only comes in one set of sizes (6-16). When I make clothes, I measure right at an 18, so that's what I've been making although they're always loose. That would be ok and I'd go for the 16, but... I want to make version B with A straps as a wedding gown for myself. I'm pregnant and I'm bulging a bit from the front. I don't look it yet, just a bit chubbier Recent measurements bump me from the usual 18 to a 20. Should I attempt this gown or not? If so, what recommendations do you have? I've never strayed from pattern pieces but I'm not afraid to learn. Just wanted your opinions first! Thanks in advance

Congratulations on your pregnancy. I'm not an expert, but it sounds like you'd like to 1. grade the pattern up one size; or 2. modify it for maternity wear.

Threads Magazine has a very nice explanation of pattern grading on their website (and it looks like it's not insider content either). Some online pattern sellers have pattern grading instructions too. Since you're only looking to go up 1 size, it shouldn't be too hard.

Vogue Patterns Magazine had a great article on converting patterns to maternity in their October/November 2011 issue. I couldn't find anything useful in a quick Google search.

Thanks for your quick reply! I have to leave but I will check out the article later today, it looks good. I did a google search first and came up with nothing - maybe because I didn't know how to word it I love the idea of getting that Vogue magazine to see about maternity sizing... some people are charging a lot of money online for "exclusive content" on how to do that. I do own some maternity patterns as well that I go through.

That is a very pretty dress, it will be great as a wedding dress, elegant and simple. You should be able to alter it to fit your form depending on when you will be wearing it and how much bigger you will be.

How pregnant will you be when you are wearing it? Do you have other children so you have a guess at how much you will gain?

Hopefully not much bigger We just want a simple ceremony and do a family dinner... not the whole knockdown dragout fest most do as I've been married before. I'm 22 weeks as of yesterday. Not "popping" until 6 months runs on my side, so I'm hoping that's the same for me too. If not, that's fine We weren't going to get married until afterwards, but I want it done before baby gets here. We just need my dress, his ring, and an officiant.

Also, I was snooping around on Vogue and they have a free magazine article from 2006: "A guide to pattern grading" so I'm reading through that too now. Thanks for all your help!

Then the guess becomes what size after? How much after, a few weeks, months? If it is fairly soon after the baby I would do a FBA by a size or 2 to be safe. The good thing is the dress is only fitted at the very top so you will not need to adjust for hips and waist if you a a little smaller or bigger. As long as you are close you should be able to make adjustments with the seam allowances if needed.
