Patterns which teach advanced techniques?

The trouble is, I am basically a beginner, and the StyleARC patterns do not have in depth instructions. I was wondering if there are any pattern lines that have particularly good instructions for High End, good quality construction and seam finishing? I would love to sew a Style ARC jacket for instance, but I know without more instructions I couldnt do it. Could I buy say a Vogue jacket pattern, use their instructions, but use the Style ARC pattern? I use Power Sewing by Sandra Betzina and the Reader's Digest Complete Guide To Sewing which were recommended to me by people on here. The only drawback is her garments tend to have 10" to 13" ease. The pattern is a bargain if you look at it as the price of a good sewing lesson.

While it's a book and not a pattern I love the fact that it has the order for sewing basic pieces; shirts, jackets, pants etc. When I am modifying something or working off a pattern with no instructions, having the order of construction has been a great help to me. Some indie patterns that might make you stretch a bit on ability are Decades of Style, Victory Patterns, Sewing Workshop patterns and all offer excellent instructions, good drafting and many sizes. Another notable is Indygo Junction patterns. They are geared towards a newer sewist, but the patterns make for some great basics with which to work and play with. Don't be put off by some of the more crafty embellishments. Be aware though, these are not highly fitted styles. Lastly, if you like vintage patterns often times patterns from the big 4 from the 60's through the mid 90's have excellent instructions. Much better on the whole than what they put in the patterns today. ------ Theresa

Sue, I am going to order a Schaeffer pattern , one that is a jacket I love the look of. But I will use a Style Arc pattern, and the Vogue for instructions.
