My husband's aunt had given me a bunch of patterns, one of them was a boy's suit jacket, pants, vest pattern (McCall's 6391) in a size 10. My son wears a 5-6 and wants a camo suit coat with black pants. How can this be sized? Would I be better off finding a suit pattern in his size?

If you were changing the pattern by one size, I'd say to flat measure and try it. Size 10 down to a 5/6 is a big change, and I'd be inclined to look for something similar in his size.

I agree that is a big size change. Watch for a sale on patterns, you can pick them up for $1 at the big box stores fairly often.
