I just ordered Jalie 3134 to make myself a suit for lap swimming. I thought a Swimwear Sew Along might help us all get motivated and share information. Anyone interested in joining me?

I need a new swimsuit before vacation in June -- am going to try to find the time to sew along with you. I have the Jalie racerback pattern and am seriously considering that one. Definitely need to build in some extra support.

Oh yes! I promised myself a new swimsuit this year. my old one is literally falling apart. I have a pattern - will share later after I dig it out - but have been unsure what fabric to use. What are you all using?

Yes, I am in or should I say, ready to take the plunge in swimsuit sewing.

I have the pattern. I have the fabric. I have even the items to make a sew-in bra for the swim suit. I just need to do it. This Swimwear Sew Along is the just the motivation I need.

I couldn't stand it - went and dug out the pattern. It is McCall's 4848 form 2005. Here is a link to a picture of it. McCall's 4848 It says to use a two-way stretch knit such as cotton lycra. That isn't regular swimsuit fabric, I don't think. Isn't the stuff labeled swimsuit fabric a 4 way knit? And it definitely isn't cotton lycra, is it?

I don't know that I'd want to use cotton spandex for a swimsuit -- cotton spandexes tend to have a lower recovery than poly spandex and nylon spandex. I use nylon spandex for most of the swimsuits I make for clients (unless they are stage suits, then it can vary). My preference is 80% nylon and 20% spandex.

I think I have that pattern in my stash as well.

I'll join in too. I could use a new swimsuit. I've got seven patterns to choose from as well as the classic Kwik Sew's "Swim & Action Wear" book that contains Master Patterns for a tank, princess line or spaghetti strap one-piece swimsuit as well as a two-piece swimsuit. It also contains excellent instructions for inserting bra cups or a bust lining (shelf bra). Although the copyright is 1995, the content is outstanding for swimsuit construction. Check it out here. Other pattern offerings include long- and short-sleeved leotards, legging, bike shorts and shorts.

I'm done. I made the tie skirt from Kwik Sew 3330 in the same fabric as a swimsuit (basic Kwik Sew tank) I made last year. The ties work almost the way a yoga pant top works with the wide foldover top.

I bought too many exercise leotards one year, and picked one I really liked from a cotton spandex to swim in. Once they are wet, they are see through. I would not make one for a public pool. I used mine in a backyard pool.
