Subject: Help!! Twin needle woes Date: 3/21/13 11:09 PM

This may be a silly question, but what am I doing wrong? Every time I try to sew with the twin needles, I only get one set of stitches. I've tried retreading both threads, using 3 different tutorials and the owner's manual. I've tried with two different twin needles.

I have tried searching the message boards and googling the problem to no avail. Please help! Please!

Haha! Apparently I can't spell today either. It's twin, not twine.

Do you have a pic of how you are threading them?
Firstly, the basics, you need two spools of thread (or a spool and a spare bobbin) and have each threaded through a needle. So one will be on its usual holder and the other on the supplementary one that comes with the machine and sits somewhere on top. Make sure they don't twist and are both threaded through the machine properly. The bobbin is used as normal.
Can you clarify what you mean by only one set of stitches - is it the once from the normal holder? What is happening with the second thread?

I tried for hours to get my Brother PC420 to sew a coverstitch-appearance on a knit. No success at all. I gave up. Then just 'because,' I decided to remove the twin needle and put the same needle on my Bernina 1230 . Bingo! I got my imitation coverstitch the first try. I used each machine's respective manual each time. Have no idea why I couldn't get the 420 to do it.

What machine are you using? Perhaps someone with the same one will be able to help.

Not sure if it matters, but is there a setting for twin needle on the machine you are using?

Well PAJ, it looks like it does..........duh, read the manual.

Haha! I'm using the pc-420! I never had this issue with my old machine, so I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I've decided to contact the Brother support. Hopefully they can figure it out.

I'm kinda new and don't know all the terminology but I'm going to hazard a guess that for some reason the bobbin hook (I think that is what it is called) is only grabbing 1 needles thread instead of both.
Can't say why that is happening, but it is the only explanation I can think of.

The PC 420 manual is a real circle jerk when it comes to explaining how to set up for twin needle sewing.

First you are referred to pages 28 through 30 on which you are referred to page 128, then page 35 and page 24 (in that order).

The Brother support may tell you the same thing.

Page 30 clearly shows that you must go to Settings and choose the twin needle setting. Then to P. 128 to see which stitches you may use. Note that twin needle setting is not removed by turning machine off. You must change it to go back to a regular needle.
