I purchased this machine in 2004 and have sewn on it 15-20 large quilts and many baby ones. Was very happy until a few years back when it started giving me tension problems. I have had it serviced several times and it sews well for a couple of quilts and then goes again. Any suggestions?

Is it the top or bottom tension? A good way to determine if it's top or bottom is to thread your machine with 2 completely different colors. That should help you figure out where the problem is. If it's bottom tension you could try a new bobbin case and if it's the top you could try taking apart the tension assembly and cleaning it or you could replace the top tension assembly. Here's a website that carries Juki parts. Good luck, hope you can get it fixed.

The bottom looks fine and the top shows the bottom thread as a small dot .

It sounds like either your top tension is a little too tight or the bottom tension is too loose. When you pull on the bobbin thread do you feel any tension?

A little test to see if your top and bottom tension are balanced is to take a square of fabric and stitch a straight line from corner to corner - across the bias. Then take each corner in your hand and give it a good quick pull. The top and bottom thread should both break. If only the top thread breaks the top tension is probably too tight. If only the bottom thread breaks the bobbin tension is probably too tight.

Time to learn how to adjust your own bobbin case tension, by the tension screw on your bobbin case, since it sounds like it's the bottom thread that is doing it. Right is tight (er) and left is looser. Maybe a lot of stitches and vibration going on in stitching "a few quilts" and it is just even getting jiggled a bit loose? If so, maybe try a new bobbin case, or even putting a drop of clear polish or something over that screw there when you got it just like you want it, if you don't like to change it back and forth for anything too often. A drop of clear nail polish would come off later with a bit of fingernail polish remover on a qtip, when and if you wanted it to later, so maybe worth trying?
