I've made many dresses with zippers and linings. I've installed zippers by machine and by hand (prick stitch) and usually things go well.

However I am wondering if anyone here has a fabulous methodology they love, for installing an invisible zipper. The zipper is at center back, and will be lined in taffeta. I am not particularly attached to installing by hand or by machine. I have never tried an invisible zipper foot, but I do have some floating around here.

I'd like any suggestions at how to proceed.

Here is a picture of the underlined bodice and skirt, the lining, and the invisible zip. There is no skirt lining, just a bodice lining.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I'm sorry I don't have any nifty alternate procedures for invisible zippers. I always just follow the directions on the zipper wrapper and they turn out perfect. I do believe you will have a better result with the invisible zipper foot. I've done them with it and without it and like the 'with' result better.
Last week I put in 2 in the sleeves of my blouse. They are no more difficult than installing a regular zipper IMO.
Your dress looks beautiful!

would it not be just as easy to install the invisible zipper in first and stitch the lining in from underneath thereby hiding the stitching...

On Collette Patterns website is a very good tute for installing an invisible zipper. I like it better than any other I've used even though it involves pressing the zipper to lay a bit flatter for installation. Works well for me and no melted coil so far.

The only thing is that you'd end up hand stitching your bodice lining down.

You might do a search of the boards (box in upper left of the web page) for invisible zippers. Someone did explain how to do the zipper and lining in one step. Not sure if your bodice fabric is too thick for doing that but it's probably worth the search.

Thank you all for your replies!

I don't mind doing the handwork on the lining. In fact I get very soothed finishing garments with handwork. I was just looking for some inspiration.

Thanks to a board search, I found this video by Otis Fashion Sophomore Studio. I have installed my invisible zipper foot and I will post the results!

Thank you everyone. I'll keep checking this thread of course.

I don't have any advice for the zipper--just want to say that your dress looks like it will be beautiful! Please post pictures when you finish.

Since the zipper will cross the bodice and skirt intersection I suggest installing it by hand and stitching both sides of the zipper at the intersection area a few inches in each direction up and down first to make sure that part is lined up. Then stitching the rest, again by hand.

I did this in a wedding gown for my DD and it worked beautifully. There were some thicker parts at the seams which hand stitching helped accomodate. The dress was lined and the lining was hand stitched down around the zipper after installing.

I always practice on scraps until I learn the steps. I always used the zipper foot and run my needle down the side of the teeth of zipper but now have an invisible foot made for my machine and it is a breeze. Just practice until you figure this out.
