I have blogged about the Garment district in Montreal. My husband and I have been going to St-Laurent, Chabanel and St-Hubert in find of amazing prices. We have found great prices on draperies ($3 per meter), Tricot lycra ($5 per meter) and notions ($1.50 for huge serger cones).
A lot of the stores on St-Hubert street are no longer there as they have gone out of business. I find St-Hubert street to be very dodgy and I am now uncomfortable going there alone. I used to go every weekend as our massage clinic was on the corner of St-Zotique (Myo massage is AMAZING).
Chabanel and St-Laurence is experiencing the same fate as the garment industry is being taken over seas with cheap labor. Has anyone gone recently? Does anyone have any other places they have visited other than the ones I mention on my blog? I plan on going back to the other address on Chabanel and adding to my list. Knowing in advance which floors to visit really saves a lot of time. I am excited to find more gems!

Your web page lists just about everywhere I have been, with the exception of BonMar on St-Laurent, but I haven't bought from them in a long time. I've been to Cansew in Toronto, not Montreal if that counts. I am sad to hear that St-Hubert has gotten dodgy. It was a shoe store paradise for me.

Sad to hear this -- I had such a great time on St. Laurent and St. Hubert when I was in Montreal for PR Weekend in June 2010. Was hoping to go back at some point to check out those stores again.

Don't get me wrong, there are still many fabric stores on St-Hubert. Just not as many as 20 years ago. I just went back today to Chabanel, St-Laurent and St-Hubert street. I will have to update my listing of stores. I snagged a beautiful shimmering blue stretch fabric for $1.50 per meter.

I go to rue St. Hubert alone all the time. I can't imagine why you find it dodgy. While a lot of places have gone out of business there are a couple of rather high end fabric shops that weren't there before and a wonderful shop ( almost next door to the Vogue shop) with all kinds of delicious trims.

I shop in st Hubert area when visiting my son in Montreal. SOMEWHERE on my computer I have a list of my favourite shops which I will compare to yours. I am planning a trip this summer (groan from a northerner). I am going to have to be careful as I am trying to sew down my stash, which includes some silks I purchased 2 years ago at my favourite huge shop that I liked. As I have some difficulty with mobility as well as language (not a huge problem shopping in Montreal as it was 30 years ago) my son or dil take me and help me. Thanks for reminding me to look for my list. SAMs name seems to ring a bell with me. Right or wrong, I have never been bothered by street environment when shopping for sewing things - the best deals in Vancouver have always been in the low rent district!

I sent my husband to American and Efrid today for Kai scissors, thread and chalk. They really have excellent prices and great quality. A 1 pound serger cone of thread for Wildcat Plus (thread for Lycra swimwear) cost only $12. Our Kai left hand professional scissors were only $71! They have so many goodies there it is crazy! My sister's boyfriend buys his mother's embroidery notions and ships it back to Scotland because the price is 9 times cheaper.

Check them out here

You can see my post on them at My Blog

Has anyone heard of this company, DELYLA? Anyone buy from them? On their website they note they will start to sell to North America.

They say they sell |QUALITY ORGANIC FABRIC FOR SALE - $15|

They are located at 5333 Casgrain Street, Suite 604, Montreal.
