I've volunteered to embroider my sister-in-laws soon to be born great grandson's name on a baby blanket she is making. She wants us to embroider Jordan on it. The blanket will be about 45"X48", solid white cotton Kona fabric. Could anyone suggest position of name on blanket, thread suggestion, and stabilizer and needle size. Any suggestions or hints will be so appreciated.

Here is an example of placement on a blanket. I have done diagonal in the corner and have been happy with it. (The last one i made I used a tear away stabilizer and probably 2" letters)

Good info on letter size and stabilizer, also. Did you use a top stabilizer as well?

I always use a top stabilizer when embroidering on fleece. I use the one that looks like plastic wrap and it dissolves in warm water. If you embroider on fleece without using it, you will loose some of the depth of the lettering into the fleece. Not as nice looking.

You really can't go wrong with diagonal in a corner for baby blankets. For baby, I wouldn't put it in the center like that example, because that is where a baby lays on it, or is swaddled up. For a kids stadium blanket, that would generally be at the chest or knees, being held.

I usually decide how big I want the font by eye-balling how big the hoop is next to the fabric, and then eye-balling what font size it takes to fill the amount of the hoop I wanted. Precise, right :)

I would definetly use wash-away stabilizer on the top of a fleece / minky blanket, but I probably wouldn't bother on Kona.

If you are doing a double layer blanket (like cotton/minky), I always try to embroider before sewing so there is no show through, but I've never had complaints about the back stitches on the single layer fleece blankets I've done. Parents and kids seem to love them.
