My wife currently has the Pfaff 2170 Embroidery sewing machine. I was thinking about surprising her for our anniversary with the Quilt Expressions 4.0 machine as she does a lot of quilting and likes to keep the 2170 setup for embroidery. Is the 4.0 a good choice to have in addition to the 2170, or are the differences w/regards to quilting not enough.

What a wonderful husband you are to be thinking of a machine for your wife! Not to dampen your enthusiasm- it's the surprise part that may not be best. The frequently given advice here for surprise machines is- hold off and get your wife's input first. The selection process is partly logical- will it do the things she likes and have the features she wants? However, subtle personal preferences can only be tested by sitting at the machine and sewing. You could get her a basket filled with some notions and a note to go shopping with you. I'm sure she'll be thrilled.
Pfaff owners and those with other brands have dedicated threads here. They will be happy to weigh in, as well as quilters with their expertise. I wish you and your wife the best.

I can't think of a more romantic gift than a sewing machine. How thoughtful!
Normally, we'd tell you that sewing machines are such a personal thing that it's best to allow the recipient to choose the machine, and that's true, but if your wife loves her Pfaff, another Pfaff is a good bet. It's a big bonus to have machines that can share feet and accessories, so consider (and confirm) that possibility in your selection.
Read the reviews on the Expression 4.0 here. *Some* of those models have been quite troublesome and had to be repaired or replaced by Pfaff. An updated model is due out soon and is seen on European websites.
If she machine quilts, she will really appreciate the 10" harp of the Expressions and Creative models. If she mostly pieces by machine, but hand quilts or has her quilts longarmed, a smaller and less expensive model might be sufficient.
Best wishes in choosing your gift!

If you know she would love you for it- yes. You might pop into the dealer and ask about return policies if you were to buy and give it to her.
If in doubt, make an apt at the dealer and take her for test drives. You might ask the dealer if they can put together a quilt test kit otherwise she will need to bring fabric and batting and thread, etc.

I have a Quilt Expression 4 and I do LOVE it! BUT! Pfaff is introducing some new machines in April, DEFINITELY don't buy until you can see what's available!
If you do like the older model, you might get a great deal if the dealer is trying to sell them off to make room for the new ones.
A sewing machine is an amazing gift! She will be thrilled!
