My wife currently has the Pfaff 2170 Embroidery sewing machine. I was thinking about surprising her for our anniversary with the Quilt Expressions 4.0 machine as she does a lot of quilting and likes to keep the 2170 setup for embroidery. Is the 4.0 a good choice to have in addition to the 2170, or are the differences w/regards to quilting not enough.

First off let me say what a lucky wife you have!

I would surprise her with a nice card that entitles her to a day of shopping for a new mchine, not an actual machine. You could even put up to a certain amount if you are on a tight budget. She really needs to sit at various machines and test them out for herself. Of course, if she is a *Pfaffie* at heart, she will likely choose another Pfaff. But, give her that option. There are newer Pfaff Expressions coming out in April, that may have some updates from the older model. Also there is the Pfaff Creative Performance which she could get with OR without the embroidery module. It's a STELLAR machine, well loved by many people here.

Sorry I cannnot speak to the comparisions in quilting between the two machines you list. I think there would be enough difference between the Creative Performance and the one she has though. It's feature loaded, and is a very good price.

I would NEVER venture to surprise my husband with power tools..... you never know.

Many Pfaff Expression 4 have had problems with tensions and feeding fabrics. I would say it isn't one of the best machines for quilting.
I give my votes for a Pfaff Performance too or a Juki F600.

What a lovely thought for your wife.

A lovely gift, but the Pfaff QE4 has had so many problems that two of three dealers I know will not sell them anymore, I also had one and would not recomment it.
If you can afford it the Pfaff Creative Performance without embroidery module would be a wonderful choice.
If you dont have to stay with Pfaff there are others that would be very good for quilting also.
Also agree with Southern Stitch, she may have something in mind that she would really like. Sewing machines are very personal so maybe be best to give her a card and take her to the store have a day of it.

Pfaff is coming out with a new model in April to replace the 4.0....the 4.2. Not sure what all, if any improvements there are.

I actually love my QE 4.0 for quilting and have not experienced any issues with it and I sew everyday on it. It has a nice large harp and is easy to free motion quilt on it. But I do believe, as others have noted, that she needs to decide which machine to get.

Julkane, So happy you have a good 4.0 Im sure there are many out there. I would think that they have corrected the problems in the 4.2 that is coming out fairly soon. The Pfaff Creatives are getting great reviews, so Im thinking the 4.2 will too.

Your lucky wife is used to using a top end machine. My vote: let her use the 2170 as her 'second' machine and upgrade her to a Creative Performance. She will love it! The larger machine bed makes such a difference with it's LED lights. And the larger touch screen makes embroidery much easier! The larger hoop size doesn't hurt either:-)
You might be able to take advantage of Pfaffs 60 month free financing for Mothers Day! That's how I just got my Creative Performance! Love it!

That new 4.2 is a sweet machine! And even if your 4.0 has been trouble free one of the first things I noticed I love about the 4.2 -- LED lighting!!! (I can see clearly now.... song playing in background... )
