News Story Link

It was a good day at work Friday.

In case anybody has missed it, I work for the company who makes those parachutes for Cirrus, as well as a lot of ultralights, Light Sport aircraft, and a couple Cessnas. We are now up to 294 on our all-time saves count.

Congratulations!! I noticed what a pretty parachute it was. Are they designed so that if the plane had crashed in the wild, the chute could be spotted?

How does that work? I've never seen a parachute in a small plane before.

The parachutes are folded like any other parachute, then placed in steel jigs and pressure packed with a hydraulic press, to about 10,000 pounds pressure. Then they are baked at low temperature, in the jig, for 24 hours to "set" the chute so it doesn't try to fluff back up as soon as the lid is taken off the jig. The unit is then packed in a protective fabric deployment bag, which is also designed to stage the parachute deployment in a controlled fashion, to get it out in the airstream in an orderly fashion for inflation. In the aircraft, it is contained in a canister or other special box, usually in or just behind the cargo area. The straps attaching the parachute to the airframe are Kevlar, up to 20,000 pound break strength, in four places. The installed parachute has no effect at all on the aircraft except for putting about 55-65 pounds of weight on board for a large unit such as the Cirrus.

In action, when you have decided that it's your last best option, you shut off the engine if running, and pull a red T handle, which fires a solid fuel rocket, which pulls the parachute out of the aircraft and into the airstream for inflation. This takes under one second from pull handle to parachute fully stretched out and starting to inflate. Inflation is purposely slowed down by a fabric ring called the slider which is mounted on the suspension lines. When the speed is reduced enough that the parachute will not blow out, it opens fully, the airplane swings a bit under it, and you are along for the ride to the ground. The hit at the ground is supposed to be equal to a 12 foot free fall, so it's going to be a hard bump, but most people walk away with minor bruises. The airplane landing gear and the seats take up quite a bit of the hit.

Wow, cool news and thanks for the detailed description. When I flew tiny Cessna's a long time ago, I never heard about anything like this. This must be something to see in action.
