I have finally found a pattern that could be used to make a Patio Dress and now the search is on for cotton fabric, lawn etc. that doesn't feel like sand paper.

Normally am a knit sewer and am at loss for reliable internet source for fabric that would be soft and cool.

Thank you all once again.

I agree, stores are so full of quilting cottons which do not drape, do they really think 80% of sewists quilt?
If you can find cotton-poly blends, but I only see those in some men's shirt stripes. How about challis (some pill tho), summer seersuckers, border-print rayon, batiks? I got some nice soft Indian batik on Etsy. If you look for batiks online, you can find sites that sell all the saris etc, which are large enough to make a dress.

This is the first that I've heard the term patio dress. I looked it up and it's like a caftan (which I have heard of) but patio dress is such a better name. And a great bit of American history. Thanks for introducing me to the term.

I don't have a good cotton source for you. I shop at the LA garment district and most of these places don't have online presence. Why don't you use a knit? Would be pretty comfy.

You didn't say how much you needed, and what price range you wanted, but I saw this: fabulous cotton lawn at Emma One Sock. However, at $22 a yard, it kind of made me gulp!

Gorgeous Fabrics has some beautiful cottons in dress weight.

Fabric Mart has cotton lawn and seersucker. They also have poplin, gauze, and voile, and a category called "Assorted."

Good luck in your search!

I usually start at Fabric Mart and FAbric.com. Lawn is soft, but it can be sheer. A lining may defeat your purpose.
I made my mil something similar out of cotton jersey with a splashy print.
The jersey was very stable, no stretch
I've used cotton and blends for blouses and summer pjs from Hawaiian Fabric Marttropical prints

Love that term--Patio Dress. Makes me think of days when I had a patio, it was hot in the sun, but I sat on the patio and drank my lemonade.

Anyway, I just bought some great rayon challis from Fabric Mart, at $5.99 a yard. Click here Great stuff! I'm making a KwikSew #2435 sundress.

Thank you all for your hints. I will be using a KS3343 pattern for this and hopefully it will work out. Since KS doesn't go on sale very often, I'll have to bite the bullet and purchase it at full price..but before that I'll search the other pattern companies.

Check out the pattern sales thread (just go straight to the last page). KS is going on sale soon.
