Did anyone catch Mr. Selfridge, the wonderful new series on PBS last night? I thought the story of the brash American man who built the first modern department store in London at the turn of the last century was quite engrossing in a Downton Abbey way -- with terrific sets, gorgeous clothes, colorful and engaging characters upstairs and down, interweaving stories and dramatic plot twists (how on earth will Selfridge pull this thing off?).

If you didn't watch it last night, be sure to turn in next Sunday night. It's on right after Call the Midwife, another terrific series about a group of English women who deliver babies in London in the 1950s. Don't miss them.

Oh, I do so agree, Nancy2001! Interesting and absorbing. The character studies are really fascinating. I won't be missing next Sunday's episode. Methinks the next 7 Sundays will fly by.

Recorded it but haven't had a chance to watch yet -- sounds like it will be a keeper.

Thanks for the heads-up. I forget to watch TV.

It's also available to watch for a limited time on the PBS website.

I might try again. I love the concept of the show and had been looking forward to it, but I wasn't liking the acting and editing last night so I didn't last much past the first half hour.

Gwen, you should try watching it again. I admit the first half hour wasn't riveting (and almost stopped watching), but once I got past that point, the story really picked up.

Me too! I saw nothing exciting about the clothing. As for the context in general, it left me thinking - Thank God I'm a country girl!"

Sorry..I'm not with it...everyone is a bit oversexed...except the lovely shop girl. Looks like they have been watching too many Viagra ads. HOWEVER the clothing is fun to watch...and Nancy that is YOUR specialty!!!
