I love this anthropologie skirt. It is on sale, but I still really don't want to pay $70. I had thought of trying to find some cloud print fabric and music sheet fabric and trying to make it. Has anyone seen any? Also, I am trying to determine if the birds are just part of the fabric or if they are appliqued on. I have zoomed in on the skirt on the anthro website, but I cannot tell.

I found this review online a review It says nothing about appliques, so I'd assume it's a print. I also would assume it's a print because I think appliques would interfere with the drape of the skirt, no matter how fine and thin.

One thought - if you really love the skirt and manage to track down supplies, I'd add up the costs. It might be hard to really find a match for a custom fabric and if you pull together a bunch of almosts, you might not be happy but be paying almost as much. This thought comes from a frugal person who has occasionally been overly frugal and been disappointed with the results, having cut a few too many corners.

This is definitely an example of the fabric making the skirt. How creative are you feeling? Check out Spoonflower.com as a way to create your own fabric prints. They might also have designers you can hire.

You've aroused my curiosity about this skirt with birds, notes and clouds! When I click on your link though, it only takes me to Anthropologie front page. Do you have a direct link to the picture?

That is a cool fabric. I agree that on my computer it looks like a print, not an applique, but I think you could totally mimic the effect with applique. The windowed applique with fusible web technique would give you a stitch-free look to the front, or use invisible thread to stitch the birds down.

Do you have an inkjet printer? If so, I'd try some of that printable fabric (I think it's marketed to quilters) to make the sheet music, then cut out the bird shapes from that.

LauraTS,
I have never heard of windowed applique with fusible web. Do you have a link to a tutorial or instructions on how to do it? That sounds like what I am looking for.
