My husband likes the bowling/island style shirts mainly because they skim his belly and don't have to be tucked in. I found a great Kwik Sew pattern and made a test shirt with some cotton "garden cloth" from Joanns. It came out decent enough to wear although I need to perfect my collars.
When it comes to his shirts my husband is very conservative. No obvious patterns or bright colors for him. Most of his RTW shirts are a 65/35 mix of rayon and poly. The fabric is a mid-weight, I think. I'm not familiar with enough fabric yet to be sure. It is tightly woven with a nice drape that falls close to the body but doesn't pull in at the hem.
I'm not looking for the exact RTW fabric but I would appreciate any suggestions on types of fabric and places to buy something plain and dark colored my husband would actually wear.

Fabric Marthas cotton shirting and also wrinkle-free cotton shirting. They also have all kinds of other cotton that would be appropriate for shirts.
