I need a size 8 for the shoulders but a size 14 for the bust and 16 for the hips so what do you do if the front pattern piece for an 8 only has size 6 and 8 on it...no other sizes?

Is there a link to the pattern?

What pattern is this? You have quite the size variation. I always need several sizes as well. Would an FBA fix the 14 needed for the bust?
How much difference in inches do you need? You could divide what you need and evenly add to all the seams but it depends on pattern. I would maybe start with the larger size as that seems to be what you need for most of your body (a 14 is easier to grade to a 16 than an 8). It might be easier to make the the neck and shoulders smaller than to fix the rest of the garment.

I was looking at Simplicity 2696 view B. The neckline looks wide too.

This is really basic, but I've been caught several times. Simplicity often has several pages of the same piece..two sizes per piece.
It's nice because you don't have the very small difference to cut in some sizes, but it makes for a heck of a lot of pieces to go through!!

If this pattern is like that, you can cut the sizes you need and tape them together...

Use the size 8 you need for the shoulders and do a FBA. Then add to the side seams any additional you need for the hips. In a tunic like this, I don't always need to add as much for the hips as I normally would.

Mary, I have the book on the pivot and slide but I don't seem to have very good luck with this technique.

I wear a B cup with a 37 inch full bust so I haven't been doing a FBA and my tops have been fitting a lot better. I am wide through the back at least 22 inches at the armholes so that's why I need a large size there and I have 40 inch hips too.

Normally I have used a pattern that has ALL sizes so I will cut an 8 at the shoulders and out to a 14 at the side seams on the front and out to a 16 at the back side seams. What do you mean by taping the together?

If I were you, and you're mostly in the bigger size range, I'd start there and then do a narrow shoulder alteration to get the shoulders right. "Everyone" says start with the shoulders, but really you need to start with whatever size works for most of your build, and some of us have disproportionately narrow shoulders for the rest of our ribcage, etc. Since this pattern doesn't have all sizes, I'd make a muslin with the shoulders the smallest you can in the range available, then the bust and hips as appropriate. Try it on and see how the shoulders look and alter from there.

Assuming this is a big 4 pattern, you could also buy both size ranges, tape them together, and go from there. Can be fiddly depending on how they nested the sizes but you can usually make it work.

I *think* she means that instead of the cutting lines for all of the sizes in the envelope, there are several "front" pattern pieces and there are only a couple of sizes to each.

like, there isn't a cutting line for 6, 8, 10 and 12 on one piece. There's 6 and 8 and then another piece has 10 and 12.

I've been at a loss as well on how to deal with grading on patterns like this.

Ideally, I'd normally cut a 14 neck/shoulders and grade to a 16. One of my blouse patterns had 14 and 16 on separate pieces so I couldn't.
