I was in Joanne's today for the McCall's patter sale and stopped to look at fabrics. I was surprised (shocked really) to see genuine silk prints on display. There were several lovely prints perfect for spring. from joann.com it was this print that caught my eye. The price was astronomical at $34.95 retail.

Has anyone used this fabric line, Simple Luxuries, at Joann? Is it worth the $$$? Has anyone seen it and considered buying?

I didn't notice the new silks when I was at JA yesterday - I'll have to go back! If you have a 50% off coupon, the price isn't bad at all.

I have occasionally seen 100% silk at Hancock, but never at JA. Maybe corporate is actually listening to our comments .

This is interesting. I'll have to load up the horses with a day's food and drive my wagon train 50 miles to see if my Joann's has this. I live pretty far from one; far from any fabric store, so it's not unusual for me to do this.

You're right--the price is astronomical. I saw Joann's tapestry fabrics triple in price one week, from $18 yard to over $54 a yard, when the issue of cotton came up. A customer in the store was showing me her selection and was so excited she had a coupon. I directed her to my discount fabric store where they have tapestry fabrics for $8-$12 a yard.

As to the silk, it may be beautiful, but the warning is too much for me to buy, especially at that price. Crocking means that the dye will rub off, as a result of imperfect dying.

In that case, the horses can still play in the pasture as I'm not going.

The crocking warning gave me pause as well. I generally associate that issue with rayons or cheapo depot fabrics, not $35/yd silk prints. I am leary of anything that price at Joanne, especially in comparison to the quality of fabrics available online.

Even at 50% off I would still hesitate unless I absolutely adored the print itself. Still it was nice to see some lovely fabric in the store for a change. I would have purchased a robins egg blue tencel knit if my stash were not already overflowing...

Thanks for the explanation about crocking!

I followed your link and I'm surprised too, but happily. That entire collection is on sale right now. I don't think $17/yard is too much for silk at all, even if its not the best silk. I went to Joann last week and was pleasantly surprised at the number of nice looking and nice feeling cottons and linens. I bought a serious pile of Swiss dot florals and a really lovely butterfly cotton voile for summer sewing. There were several voiles and sateens to choose from as well as a whole bay of printed linens that were pretty nice. There was even this very interesting black and white floral cotton jacquard. Is it too much to hope tht Joann is listening?
