I'm new to sewing and am happily sewing along with my $100 Singer Talent machine :)

I want a serger. Something awful. I spent last weekend cataloging and photographing goodies from my craft businesses and managed to sell a whopping $255 last weekend alone! Woohoo! That was automatically deemed serger money.

So I'm ready!

I'm thinking, based on all the threads I've read (LOTS) and all the blogs I've visited. And sewists who sew stuff that I really like...that I'm going to go with the Brother 1034D. I know people here recommend buying from a dealer for classes/lessons that are often included. And I have checked with a local dealer here and it's $300 there. But it's $179-$209 online!

Is it worth it to buy online and then try to find a class separately?

Is the 1034D 'user friendly'?

I bought the Brother off Amazon a year and a half ago. I haven't had any problem with it. It is easy to operate (although not as easy as the more expensive sergers). It has a beautiful rolled hem. I paid less than $200. I am a pretty independent person and don't mind figuring things out for myself so that wasn't a problem for me. Dealers support is certainly a nice plus so I think that is a decision only you can make for yourself. You will love having a serger! So glad you will be able to get one!

Get it online. Look for free shipping.
Craftsy offers a Beginner Serging class that is perfect for starters. Watch for it on sale. There are tons of tutorials online plus a beefy thread for the Brother 1034d here on PR offering unlimited support.
Congratulations on your crafting for money success! Enjoy the serger.

I normally advise buying from a dealer, but for (1) products in this price range and (2) when the user is already experienced.

Follow the manual and for additional techniques, there are books you can purchase. Serge With Confidence by Nancy Zieman includes many techniques, using a variety of thread types and several brands and models of sergers.

Should the serger ever need service, any authorized Brother dealer would do so no matter how you came to be the owner.

People relocate every day all over the world and it would be impossible to have the machine serviced by the original shop.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the help.

I'm pretty good with picking things up. I still get made at myself that I had to get knitting lessons because that was the one thing I couldn't teach myself! :D

I'm going to order! I'm excited!!!!

OH! Me, too! Me, too!

I ordered my 1034D from Amazon ( free shipping). It arrived this week, but busy with projects for my kids. Need to pick up thread cones to rethread it and play.

I choose that model for my Starter as the price, the reviews on PR, the amazing help threads on PR, and my Brother machines have been great workhorses. Easy to use, too! Found books at library to help.

Can't wait to hear your adventures in serving!

YAY!!!!! Congrats!!

I ended up ordering from All Brands...It's supposed to be here Wednesday/Thursday. I cannot WAIT!

I keep showing my husband and kids the inside of their RTW garments to show the difference between serged seams and unfinished seams. :)

Hi Mrs.Charisma. I bought my 1034D last year when Amazon was having a smokin' sale. It's been a very good machine and I'm so glad I bought it. It did take some time, though, to get used to threading, tension and such. Here are some things that have been super helpful to me, as an independent serger-er.

First and foremost is this thread here on PR. Amazing amount of information that I still refer to when I'm stuck.

PR Brother 1034 thread

ETA: I just realized the link above just takes you to a main page and not the super helpful PR 1034D thread. This link should work.

Threading the machine took a little practice, but this youtube video was great! Much clearer than the DVDs Brother sends you.

Artistkae's 1034D threading tutorial

Brother does have some DVD tutorials that you can also find on youtube. They have helpful info., but be warned. It's a snoozer. Better than Ambien.

Brother 1034D Serger Techniques

I would recommend "The Complete Serger Handbook" by Chris James that was going for about $2 last year. I see now that it's listed at $89 on Amazon. Instead, I agree with Schmammy that the Craftsy Class on beginning serging is a much better bang for your bet. Only $25 when there's a sale.

Best of luck to you! I hope you love your serger as much as I do!

I also recommend "The Complete Serger Handbook" by Chris James. I guess I also lucked out when I got it from Amazon for $2 last summer! It does have a great explanation of how thread tension affects your stitches, along with several photos of correct and incorrect stitches to help you troubleshoot tension issues. If you can find the book used somewhere for a decent price, it is worth owning.

Enjoy your 1034D! I love mine and it's worked great for me so far.
