On Tuesday Microsoft had many very important updates. Today Kim Komando said that Microsoft put out a warning that one of the updates is bad and could possibly crash your computer. She suggested that it be deleted and not installed until Microsoft comes up with a corrected one.

It is KB2823324. To delete go to Control Panel>Programs>View installed, highlight and delete. You will need to restart your computer.

These updates were for all versions of IE from 6 up.

I don't remember that Windows 98 was mentioned, but every operating system since then. It also said that every Internet Explorer from IE6 and up. I'm not certain what that particular update was for.

I just checked Microsoft's site and it doesn't look like they have a corrected update yet. They are no longer including the bad update in the list of updates.

Sorry that I can't be more specific.

Well, that makes me glad I don't use IE--I'm a Google Chrome gal, myself.

Chrome and Firefox already had their updates. The reason it took Microsoft longer is because theirs is so much more involved. So, no browser was free from needing these updates, just that IE has been around longer and with more versions and all since IE6 had to be fixed.

I had the recent update just a few days ago. I searched my Add/Remove file and did not see it there. I am running Windows XP & Google Chrome but also my DH uses IE8 which is not supported by Google. Eventually I will get a new computer but for now I think I am OK.

It is a security update and has nothing to do with any browser. The update is specific to a security update for the Windows file system kernel-mode driver (ntfs.sys). Info is posted on the Microsoft web site.

Knowing very little about computers, I won't argue about what the patches are for but here is one of the many articles about it.

Reason for patches

Two brief quotes from that article:

"The critical ones (patches) affect Internet Explorer and Windows itself."

"Mozilla and Google triumphantly rushed out patches to the holes in Firefox and Chrome...."
