I don't know how to wash it. SHould I assume the safe side and buy a home dry cleaning kit?

Can we have more information? Can you describe the fabric? What is it made of (silk, rayon, cotton, poly, etc)? Is it a woven or a knit (does it stretch and do the edges curl?)?

Lots of velvet, happily, is totally washable. Some of it you might want to wash by hand. I got honey on a beloved silk velvet top, and it responded beautifully to hand washing. I wouldn't hesitate to machine wash stretch (knit) velvet. Anything else I would probably do some test swatches before deciding. Another factor is how much use/wear/cleaning will the finished garment require.
