I am new to quilting and have a limited budget for a machine. I am really interrested in the older vikings but need some input on which would be best. Options so far: #1+, Quilt Designer, Designer 1, Sapphire 850 or the 1100. I will mostly use this for quilting, some embroidery, and everyday use. Sugestions?????

If you find a machine you are interested in, the very best thing to do is try it out! There is no one who can tell you which machine to buy.Have you narrowed yourself down to Viking machines because you have tried them and like them? What other sewing do you do? Choosing a machine is very subjective, so I suggest you read reviews like crazy, and then go try machines - don't be afraid to tell dealers just exactly what you are looking for both usage and budget wise - then maybe you can find a good dealer - many times they have really nice used machines. I have had good luck this way myself!

I'll second all of the above. Don't limit yourself to any one brand. Try as many as you can find.

Look for a roomy harp (area to the right of the presser foot) and, feed dogs that drop (much easier to work with free motion quilting than a machine that does not have this feature).
