Date: 5/27/05 8:27 AM Do you use yours very often? I have unlimited stitches on my machine but hardly ever use them. I just finished a jean jacket with decorataive stitching (I'll post a review and pic as soon as I get batteries for the camera!) If it looks too home-made, tell me before I wear it in public!! Also, I use these stitiches to spruce up pillowcases sometimes.
Where do you use your decorative stitches?

Date: 5/27/05 9:42 AM They are nice on childrens clothes, crazy quilting, totes and purses, pillow cases. I always think I should use them more too. I seldom use them on garments I make. Any other suggestions would be great. Can't wait to see your jean jacket. Oh I have also used them on pillows. ------

Date: 5/27/05 10:27 AM They are great for little girls clothes, on tea towels, (I made a few from a nice weight muslin for my Dsis and she loved them!): sometimes on a collar or cuff-but you have to be careful, I agree about overdoing it or making it look too homemade. Using a monochromatic thread theme could look sophisticated-like a light blue against dark blue chambray for instance.
Also along hems for capris it could be cute. Cosmetic bags or change purses, things like that.
I'm with nickle, I feel guilty not using them more often! |

Date: 5/27/05 12:05 PM Actually - I use them alot when I do heirloom, expecially with twin and wing needles. You can get some lovely effects even from utility stitches, especially with wing needles.
I've also used the built in decorative sttiches to supplement machien embroidery.

Date: 5/27/05 12:06 PM I use one of my decorative stretch stitches to hem my little daughter's clothes - usually t-shirts. It provides a nice stretchy hem without me having to set up my twin needle, and it's also cute! ------

I use quite a few of my decorative stitches on my granddaughter's clothes -- just a touch here and there. Also, I've used them extensively on decorative pillows. I have one in particular that was made from just a solid burgundy chintz that I divided it into 4 sections and stitched several stitches all over, it now looks like leather! I've even been asked if it's leather!
The thing that has helped me with my decorator stitches more than anything is making a sample book of all my stitches. Spending a few minutes at a time when I first got my new machine, I sewed out all the stitches on my machine (340 ) in about 5 inches lengths up and down rows with the stitch number written in permanent pen next to each one. I used a variety of threads and colors just for fun. I refer to it a lot! Many of the stitches are much prettier and more interesting stitched out than I could have imagined just by looking at the machine screen or the manual. If anybody is interested, I guess I could post a photo sample.

Would it be possible for you to post pics or links so that we can see what you're talking about.
I don't do heirloom very much, but would love to see what else my wing needle can do besides punch holes! 
I'd also like to know which decorative stitch works for hemming -- altho I probably don't have it on my Viking Lily.
Peg, I'd love to see the piece that folks thought was leather!! I did the same "sampler" thing w my dec stitches when I first got my machine, but I don't use them. I think I lack the imagination. maybe some pics would inspire my creative juices.

Date: 5/27/05 1:21 PM I only use the decorative stitches on children's garments, and even then I use them rarely. I personally don't buy garments for myself with "extra" stuff on them, preferring the garments speak of the fabric and or the pattern. I have't purchased an embroidery machine since I so rarely add that kind of embellishment to my garments; nor do I purchase garments with such. ------
