Greetings,
Today I was in Whole Earth today and say Flax's new line. They are very simple tunic, palazzo type pant with a duster. All done in very nice linen and all very proudly priced. I do not know what this look is called and right now I am piece mealing each of the pieces but I want them to work together. Does anyone know what name I should be searching for....please and thank you. Secondly, I loved everything Judi Dench wore in Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Would someone be kind enough to tell me what those long tunic tops are called? Both 'looks' are below. I most graciously thank you.

Oh, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel -- what a lovely movie. I think salwar kameez (or any number of interesting spelling variations) is what you're looking for. In browsing for it (since the name had completely fled what masquerades as my mind), I came across this site with all kinds of pretty (and pretty reasonable prices): India Emporium. I note that for a number of the outfits, you can purchase fabric only, although they're, to my mind, cagey about how much fabric you actually get, only requesting your measurements after you've ordered. But they do also offer an online chat, so I'm sure one could get more information if one were interested in ordering (I *cough* have enough fabric at the moment, so I'm not ordering). Just for clarification, I have no affiliation with the site, have never ordered from them and found them through a google search. Order at your own risk!

As far as patterns go, you could do worse than Folkwear 135, "Jewels of India." But really, any tunic in a shape you find pleasing, along with leggings or fuller trousers (with or without the traditional dropped crotch), would probably work just fine.

Hope this helps.

Burdastyle magazine has this look/pattern in their March or April edition. They should have it as a dowloadable too on the Burdastyle site.

They are called "salwar" and are 3 piece sets.

'Salwar' is the name for the loose flowy pants.
'Kameez' is the name for the loose, long tunic
'Dupatta' is the name for the scarf or shawl.
Now if the pants are tight and long, that can be scrunched at the ankles, those are called 'churidhar'.

Answering the OP, any long tunic patten will wok well.

The particular style of top she wears, which you can buy without matching pants, is called a kurta, and if they are short, it's a kurti. And for those language geeks among you, please note the similarity between "kameez" and "chemise"--oh the joys of the Indo-European language family!

Some of them are just crying to be knocked off, aren't they? You might find something in Burda or Kwik-Sew that would work as a starting point. I'm planning on copying their bias back caper jacket (KS3077 jacket, lengthened) if I can ever get a couple of these other projects out of the way. The IL019 linen from fabrics-store looks a lot like their medium weight linen.

What about Butterick 5473 as a point of beginning? It has pants and a long tunic type coat/vest. You would need a pattern for a woven t shirt, perhaps something like Butterick 3383. A Vogue Marcy Tilton top would be a nice addition as would a basic skirt.

When I was in India last year I bought a fabric "set"
It had a beautiful embroidered front piece, but the piece for the back was plain, then another piece for a neck scarf...different fabric, and finally a piece for the bottom , different fabric again. Not enough for my copius body, but I can match that easy if and when......I ever get around to making it up. Originally I was ony getting it for the embroidery to make a blouse.
