I love the asymmetrical ruching at the top of this maxi skirt.
Looking for a pattern/tutorial...

Huh. On the front view it looks like the waistband is cut on (no waistband), but in back it looks like it's a separate pattern piece. I think your approach would differ depending. The separate piece would be easier--you should be able to take any long foldover yoga waistband, shirr one side, and tug the other side down over your hip. I remember a post here semi-recently about making foldover waistbands for (little girls'?) yoga pants, if you can hunt that down.

Here's a yoga waistband tutorial:

I vote for Stirwater's idea , you could achieve this too with the Fabric.com free Nancy pattern, which has a foldover yoga waistband
long enough to pull up for a strapless top (for those less endowed!)
So it should be long enough to gather up one side.

really LOVE that skirt!!!! it def could be done using the tips mentioned!!

ETA..even if the fold-over piece was the same length, it could be ruched on one side. it might give it a slightly different look tho.

Schmanny,

I love that skirt ! It looks to me like it's ruched about 5 inces on one side and around 10 inches on the other side. I'm going to try copying it too. I think I'd start with 2 waistband pieces that are approximately 9 inches long on one side and around 18 -20 inches long on the other side. I'll sew the waistband pieces into circle, gather it at the seams and then sew to the skirt. When I'm happy with the gathers I'll secure it by stitching through the gathers and side seam. A slight zigzag will probably be the way to go, don't want to pop the stitches when pulling on the skirt. Remember if you use a cut on waist band and fold it over you'll be seeing the wrong side of the fabric.

I'm off to dig through my stash for some swingy knit.

It's on sale for $39.90. I'd just swing on over to Nordstrom (or nordstrom.com) and buy it, then figure out how they did it.

You guys are great! Before reading your replies, I never considered just jumping in and trying to replicate the look. Now, I'm itching to get started!

If Nordstrom's wasn't all the way in Dallas, I would pop in and at least examine the skirt. I'll play with the waistband in some cheapo knit, then see what happens. And, BONUS! sounds like a couple of you are gearing up to give it a go as well. Let's post our results and come up with a plan!

I too would love to swing on over to Nordstrom's, even just to have a look at the skirt but it's a 180 mile round trip. Instead I'll spend the time and fabric trying to duplicate the look.

Schmammy this is going to be a fun challenge.
