Well I persevered looking for a Bernina 830 record. After many months it popped up locally and after a few weeks I inquired. It was still for sale, so I went to the flea market without any great expectation on the condition. I was amazed, it was in near flawless condition with everything included but the knee press. I sat and sewed for awhile, never having been behind the wheel of a Bernina. What an amazing machine. With a bit of haggling, I paid 350.00 and thought it was a good price. The manual has it's original delivery date as Oct. 1978. It's owner was a textile artist who years ago moved on to a more sophisticated industrial machine. This one has been stored in her little red box ever since. I am so proud to be it's new owner!

You are going to love this machine. I got mine new in 1974 and sewed exclusively on it till 3 years ago with never a hiccup. Sewed through organza, chiffon, jersey, coating, menwear worsted, free-motion quilting, canvas- you name it. The 830 Record is a keeper in my book. I paid $450 all those decades ago, so monetarily, as well as for sewing pleasure, they hold their value. Enjoy!

PS If you can find a Knee Lifter, they are very nifty and addicting. It mechanically raises/lowers the pressure foot according to the amount of knee pressure you apply to the lift. It's not the modern pre-set increments on many modern machines.

Congratulations - sounds like you scored! An 830 Record was my first Bernina, purchased new in 1975. What a great machine!

You might like to follow this other thread started today-
Bernina 830 Record Knee Lifter info

This was the key thing of interest-

Quote:
Because the newer model Bernina knee lifts look like they'd be so much better (because they curve outward) than the standard-issue lift that comes with the 830, I emailed Bernina to find out if any of the newer models' knee lift would fit the old-style 830, and they said yes, that the knee lift from the 1130 would fit. Hooray! Now all I have to do is find one!

I am getting my 'new' 78 Bernina 830 Record serviced tomorrow. Sews beautifully but I am having a bit of difficulty with cam adjustments for decorative stitches. Over the phone, the pleasant serviceman said that if the machine sits too long the oil can get gummy and cause the cam plates to stick? The previous owner had not used the machine for quite awhile. It is in beautiful condition, no rust or wear cosmetically. Ever heard of this with the internal cams? Thanks!
