The 1008 is an excellent, basic mechanical machine.

Not quite as many bells and whistles as the vintage 1030, though. No knee lift, for instance.
It can be used with all of the Red boxed/Old Style feet-- so there's 50--60 to choose from. (The Bernina electronic machines use White Boxed/New Style feet, which are not interchangeable. Unless you plan to share, this shouldn't be a problem.

The buttonhole is manual (6 step), not automatic. There's no pressure adjustment for the presser foot. The needle can't be programmed to embed it self in the fabric when you take your foot off the foot pedal.

However, if you consider all those extra features to be overrated novelties, it's a durable, well made, "basic machine"-- not a plasticy beginner's sewing machine.

I have a 330, but then again, I prefer electronics.

Yes it is a very nice basic machine. No bells or whistles. But has great stitch quality and is quiet and easy to use very sturdy.

One other thing-- the 1008 has no needle threader. Semi automatic needle threaders are an acquired taste, though.

I was going to say, it's a nice machine, but a 1030 is definitely better. Knee lift, long stitch function (for up to 10mm long stitches-great for basting).

just read your bio.40 years, and a singer 403A. Do you have a particular purpose in mind for this machine?
