If I am looking to sew sequin trim on spandex fabric, does it need to be the stretchy kind? If not, how do I use the regular trim without it busting when the fabric stretches?

It has to be stretchy, no other choice! Period! It has to be able to stretch with the spandex.

For small areas (i.e. to outline an applique or highlight a design feature), I have used non-stretch sequin trim with success.

The secret is to stretch the garment while you are sewing on the trim -- I put mine onto a dress form and hand stitch the trim while on the form. When you remove the item the sequin trim will appear puckered but when it is put on it straightens out. Just did this last week to outline an applique on the back of a pair of fitness shorts for one of my fitness competitor clients.

If you are wanting to trim necklines or sleeves/wrists or armholes, you will want to use the stretchy sequin trim as these are areas where the maximum stretch is required.

It depends on the garment, and if you're stitching strung sequins or appliques.
If the garment is close fitting, and there is alot of trim, I add a zipper.
I also pin the trim in position while the garment is worn because trim pinned on flat can be distorted when stretched.
Also strung sequins have a nap, you need to know that if you sew them on by machine.

The exceptions would be if you are edging a full skirt or some other area of the garment that will not necessarily be stretched during wearing.
