I'm going tomorrow to look at a 7 year old Bernina Activa 230 Patchwork Edition. It comes with 5 feet, walking foot, large extension table and wheeled case.
She is asking $300 for the lot. I've read the reviews and they seem good. The price seems like unless it looks like it was left in the rain and dropped down a flight of stairs I should buy it.

Any problems with that line from that age that are known? Anything go wonky with the 230's I should check?

I have a Juki 600, Janome 6600, '68 Kenmore 158, serger and cover-stitch machine. This would be a class and backup machine. My 3yo is showing interest so I my use it to teach her.

Thanks for your help

Bring some fabric and test drive it. Put it through its paces, have her demonstrate and stitch out a buttonhole on your fabric. Check the bobbin area and see if it is clean. Check the tension and stitch balance. Ask when was the last time it was serviced by a bernina dealer, and name of dealer. The price is almost too good to be true, so be thorough. (The Bernina walking foot alone usually sells for approx $125.) They are fantastic machines, and I've not read of any known issues with them.

Likewise, I have read of no issues with the 230. It seems like an excellent buy assuming everything is in working order. It'd be an excellent machine for your purposes and that's just a whale of a price to include walking foot, large table and wheeled tote! Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

I have a 230 and remember if you want to add a knee lift or the really excellent Bernina heel tap foot pedal they will each cost about $150, plus the earlier ones did not come with the compact fluorescent light that wraps around the needle area. That costs too. Mine came with the knee lift and light however. Also if you aren't used to these items you won't miss them. The machine is sturdy and reliable.

I would just figure in a visit to a Bernina dealer for a check over and routine maintenance. That's what I'd do, but I respect and depend on my dealer to keep my machines humming!
