Hi, this is my first post and I am happy to have found this site. It has been many years since I sewed for myself and my son's. Over 30,so I consider myself a beginner as I have forgotten so much. I have a pattern for a simple summer pullover top and I find I need to alter the waist. My bust size is in one column and my waist falls in a larger size. If I use the larger size it will be to large in the bust and my shoulders because they are very narrow and I have trouble with clothes hanging off them, so I thought it would be better to enlarge at the waist. It is only a matter of a half and inch difference between the two size columns. In the correct bust size the waist is a half inch too small. How do I increase the size by a half inch to use the size I want for the bust? Thank you for any help.

When you cut (or trace - this is better!) the pattern, you don't have to stick to just one size.

Follow the lines for the smaller size at the top, follow the larger lines from the waist down (sometimes I'm 2 sizes larger at the hip! LOL), and in between follow the general curve of the pattern to join the 2 sizes. You can just eyeball it, or use a French curve or one of the great curved rulers out there.

Here's a perfect illustration (the curved line is the good one) - it even shows a ruler sort of like mine. The difference is here the sizes are for the waist and hip, not bust/waist, but the idea is the same.
