I originally bought this bold print cotton sateen fabric

to make an inspired version of this Modcloth dress:

The fabric just reminded me so much of the fabric in the Modcloth dress. Now I am second guessing myself. Do you think it would look good to make a similar dress from that fabric? If you can think of any other patterns that would go well with that fabric, I would be so appreciative. If you think my fabric is atrociously ugly and would be better used as a muslin, tell me that too. Thanks.

That looks like a pretty good facsimile.

The only thing I don't like about it is that yours has too much of the mustard color for my liking, while the original has more green (a color I prefer).

If you have the confidence to wear something that bold, I'd say go for it.

That sort of dress is probably a good choice for cotton sateen. There's probably enough stiffness in the drape (can't see it in your photo) for the skirt to stand out like that. You could also probably go with a half-circle skirt or a pleated skirt. I would do one of those rather than the gathering just to avoid puffiness in the abdomen.

Some patterns I have seen that might be close - Coffee date dress (w/out the frill), the Colette Truffle (from their handbook), the Salme Sonja (for pleats), or the Burda Elisabeth (it has a bit more arm coverage, but it's the first one I thought of). S1873 is also pretty close (view C with the longer skirt). M6754 is a good example of a full circle skirt instead of the gathers. KS 3682 has a V neck, but otherwise fits the bill, but KS3521 might be closer.

Two of these are FREE patterns!

FWIW, that print made me smile.

That fabric seems to me like a good match for the design. It's bold, but so is the original.

You couldn't make something atrociously ugly if you tried--even if you had the worst fabric in the world (which this is not) to work with!

I think your match is amazing; it wasn't until I looked closer I noticed the slight tonal differences in the colors. I guess the real question is this: Do you still like that Modcloth dress? If so, what are you waiting for? :D

I think it's fabulous...perfect for a summer dress.

Love the fabric. My first thought was a nice maxi dress. I think the pattern you're considering would work well too, just not my favorite style. Just my opinion. I've been on a maxi kick lately for some cruise dresses. (I know, I need to get busy and do some reviews)

Thanks so much everyone and, stirwatersblue, you are too kind. Believe me, I have made some ugly stuff that never saw the light of day.
