My GD loves Olivia the piglet's red formal dress and begs me to make it for her.

I am thinking I could use the bodice of McCall's 6685

with the gown of McCall's 2536 if I knew the kind of fabric needed to make the dress look strapless like Olivia's.

Anyone know what I need and where to buy it? Don't they use this stuff on skater's outfits and such. Or maybe that's for knit outfits and I need something else?

I think you might want something called "power mesh".

EOS: Power mesh

as product, perhaps the cream color

I use glistenette, in a nude color, it's a sheer lycra used in skating/dancewear. And I use clear elastic for the armholes and neck and apply it like for swimwear/leotards.
Powermesh can work too, but it's not as sheer, I've also used nude swimsuit lining in a pinch.

Fabric Depot, a mail order company located in Texas, has tons of skating and dance costume fabrics. The owner is extremely helpful and knows her stock very well. I would give her a call and explain what you want to do.

Sheer illusion is what I have always heard it called.

Sheer illusion or illusion mesh -- comes in shades of nude.

You can also get glissenette which is a finer mesh and usually has a shimmer or sheen to it -- also comes in shades of nude.

I find power mesh/power net to be too heavy for areas where you are going for the nude look.

I get mine from Spandex World, Spandex House or Suzie Spandex -- Suzie Spandex has the most limited selection. All will send out samples.

To rtrittel,

Piglet from Winnie-the-Pooh is not the same as Olivia the Piglet to whom the OP is referring. I think Ian Falconer is the author of this one (A A Milne did the Wnnie-the-Pooh classic).

Eleanor, thank you for the clarification. I was afraid I was going to have to dig out my old Winnie the Pooh books and re-read to see what I had missed!

I would use glistenette, and not finish the edges at the armholes if it was to be carefully worn, that gives the best "skin" look. Like you see here

If it needs some substance, I'd use stretch mesh, still see through but quite strong.

Glistenette, buy the matte type

Stretch mesh.
