I find thread selection a bit of a guessing game. Do you buy a few stock colors or purchase for projects? Any suggestions or guidance on sewing threads? Thanks

I always use either Guttermann or Mettler, both 100% polyester threads. I don't like Coats and Clark because my machine (Bernina) hates it - the stitches don't look as nice, and it sometimes snaps.

I bought a thread collection of Guttermann on sale - it had 90 spools in various colors. I replace them when I run out of one, but it's nice to have a big selection to choose from. I used to go to the store with swatches for each project, but that got old!

I did the same thing and bought the wall rack of Gutermann. It allows me to have a pretty close color match most of the time.
Then for piecing I have a bunch of neutrals on cones.
And I have to admit to having a bit of a thread weakness so I have a lot of different kinds and colors.

I always have the basics on hand (black, white, navy, etc.). But I will buy the matching thread for a fabric as I get it. I think ahead what I'm planning to make next and check to see if I have a thread or if I need to order some.

My favorite threads are So Fine #50 and Tire #50 Silk, both from Superior. I bought the color charts for both so it's easy to pick out the right color thread. It's very clean thread...doesn't lint up the machines.

I sew 1-3 garments a month, and buy a thread for a project to match my fabric. Right now I use Gutermann polyester, 100% cotton and silk. Last time for a linen tunic I got polyester and cotton thread to see which one will give me nicer looking stitch. I found that I like cotton thread stitch better and used polyester for overlocking the garment.
It depends on what and how many items you are going to sew. If you are going to sew large volumes you need to buy thread on large bobbins in bulk.
I have Maxi Lock bobbins in white and black for a serger and occasionally use them.

Check out wawak.com. Gutermann Mara 100 spools of 1000 meters are only $1.86 each till end of April. These thread are 100% polyester and are very good for garment sewing or piecing. I also ordered a real thread color chart. It will be very helpful in matching thread and fabric color. I mostly do garment sewing and I love this thread.

I can see what you mean about ordering a color chart, lol. Lots to choose from but a chart in hand would be so much easier! I am just now getting back into sewing after many years. Learning alot of new things that I wasn't aware of in the 70's. Thanks for your advice, Nonette
