Hi everyone,

Can anyone recommend a good online tutorial (or ebook) for binding the armholes on a tank top or sleeveless knit top with self-fabric? I am hoping for something easy and quick and that does not require a serger or coverstitch machine (hah, demanding I know).

I would like to avoid bulk in that area, which is what I figure I'd end up with if I try to make it up as I go along.

Besides bulk, another issue is gaping at the armholes. I don't have a big chest at all, but maybe it's just an inherent issue with sleeveless tops unless they have negative ease? I am wondering whether the fabric should be subtly gathered at the armholes. Otherwise, though it seems odd to have to do this with a knit -- especially for someone who is not well-endowed -- maybe I have to use a dart or a pattern with princess seams? If the latter, I likely won't have a tank top any time soon...

Also, any reason I can't adapt Jalie 2805 for a sleeveless t-shirt? Otherwise, maybe I can find an old, ruined tank that more or less fits and use that as a pattern. I have another knit top pattern or two, but they are probably too complicated for what I can handle at the moment.

I am really not in a condition to sew yet, but I will likely be desperate for cotton tanks/shells this summer and RTW is letting me down :(.

Thanks so much in advance for any clues.

There are some threads on PR that are helpful. Some of them have been earmarked with this made up keyword (or what I call search term):

binding knit thread

Connect the three words above to make one long made up word and using it in the message board search function. Search messages. Leave the name of the poster blank.

There is another category that may be helpful to you in the future, bias binding woven thread (run all four words together to make one long made up word). You can find other categories by checking the Message Searches, Bumping Threads thread that has been pinned in the Miscellaneous section.

Here is some basic info about getting rid of gaping armholes in things like woven tanks and sleeveless dresses. This is good stuff to know in general, because gaping in this region is a very common problem.

Now, as to the specifics of making a gap free tank top, go to this discussion at artisanssquare, looking for the post by Susan in Saint John. She refers to an unusual technique called the 'HookieDoo,'invented by Gale Grigg Hazen and described in detail in her book, "Fantastic Fit for Every Body,"which can be found online pretty cheaply.

I have also read Bout techniques simiilar to SRah Veblen's wonderful knit neck binding, which does involve stretching the binding a bit more a certain points on the curve.

I often skip the binding and finish the edge with 3/8 elastic, using the same method as swimwear.
I use elastic about an inch shorter than the armhole and stretch it a little bit in the front area that tends to gape.

I had this issue last year when I made a sleeveless t. I had gaping-I fixed that by sewing the underarm up a little. That is not the correct fix but I knew if I ripped the binding off then everything was going to stretch more. I didn't use a small enough binding-my binding nearly matched up to the sleeves. I think it might have helped if it had been an inch or so shorter than the sleeve. I also think the next time I want that (and I might for summer) that I would adjust the pattern. The armhole needed for a sleeve is lower than what you need for a sleeveless look. I will be reading this to see what other ideas people have. It is a good question with summer upon here in the US.

Around the minutes and 1/2 point, Jalie demos doing a binding on this skating dress. The concept is the same for any knit top.
