I got the following email from Jo-Ann's. Did they send this to everyone as an advertisement? Or might they really listen? Shall I sign up?

They should do a survey for each store.

My closest one is about 3 years old and there are times the chemical smell is so bad I go right back out.

I haven't seen that one either. Certainly is a change of heart, for them to actually want to hear what the customer has to say.

Take the survey and give it to 'em with both barrels

They would not have to be doing that if they paid attention to their Feedback the last couple of years.
I find the only big corporations that change things for customers (instead of stockholders) are instances like Netflix, when customers cancelled by the thousands when they tried to double prices.

Unfortunately we can't seem to affect their sales when we've got all these newbie scrapbookers, wanta-be-sewing-Fleecers, beaders. Just change the name to JA Crafts. I'm pulling for Hancock's to overtake them for true sewists and--Wishlist....some online dealers setting up small quilt-size shops of apparel fabric for many not near big city outlets.

I would say, Yes, go ahead and talk about your experiences. Also, bring up the topic that you are part of an online group that has members who are disgusted with them.

I did the survey but didn't get to give any opinions. This one was just to find out about my interests, sex, race, etc. Apparently they'll look at my answers and decide if they want me to do more surveys. At least they gave me a coupon for my trouble.

I would say the majority opinion on this site is that JA's is unsatisfactory as a retail store. The fabrics are poor quality ,the selection limited to quilting cotton and costume type cloth.They are often understocked in basics :zippers,buttons,underlinings. They have to post warnings about the formaldehyde in the JoAnn's name quilting cotton.But the chemical smell is obvious. Joanns has a monopoly on fabric stores in many areas of the States which could be enormously profitable but carelessly neglects market logic.People shop online because there are no local alternatives to the inadequate merchandise at this store. I've never seen one positive statement among the 1000's of members on this site.Invite them to troll the messages on Pattern Review if they want a clear picture of what a sewing person needs from a retailer.
