I have a babylock imagine and am trying to shirr the side seams a bit. I tried the differential feed at 2.0 and it did gather but as I pulled it out of the machine the gathering became flat again. Is there a trick to gathering knits?

What type of knit is it? Thick or thin? Cotton interlock or rayon/lycra? Thinner fabrics usually gather much better than heavier ones.

I gather knits the old-fashioned way, on the sewing machine. I've made some ruched side seam tops for my DDIL and I have more control over the gathers on the SM than the serger.

All I can think of then, is to grab the thread chain tail as close to the end of the stitches so that it doesn't come undone. Maybe try increasing the presser foot pressure too.
