Hi:

I just received the magic pencil skirt pattern in the mail and I would like to make it up, but I am not sure about the stretch. For wovens should it stretch 20% in both directions or just one? Do the knits need the same stretch? Thanks.

Most stretch wovens have stretch in only 1 direction, just make sure the stretch is going around the body.
The knit should also have at least 20% stretch going around the body.. If your knit has a different stretch, such as 50%, you should go down one size. If it's 30% stretch, you'll probably need to take in the side seams a little.
If your knits/stretch woven has less than 20% stretch, going up a size would compensate.
I made this skirt for my daughter our of ponte knit, (poly/rayon/lycra). She was right on the border for the 2 smallest sizes, so I went with the bigger size. I ended up taking it in a little. I also made the high waisted version and she liked it, but it wasn't as high as she would have liked. (but she does have a long torso)

My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.
