The pressure foot shaft on my Singer machine is stuck in the up position. The lever brings it up but I can only push manually to get the pressure foot down all the way. The bobbin winder is in the proper position. Can this be repaired myself? The machine is about 10 years old. thanks

Your machine's presser foot may have two levels. Lift the presser foot lever up as high as it will go, then back down.

To be clear, be sure to reference the foot as a presser foot as some machines have a pressure adjustment for the presser foot, which in this case has no bearing.

My suggestion is to remove some covers as needed to gain visual access to the mechanism governing the presser foot lifting action. Examine this action while operating the lift lever to see what is supposed to happen, and what is going wrong. This should be fairly basic mechanical motion. It may be as simple as cleaning and lubricating the moving parts. Many mechanical problems are that easy. Give it a try.
