Very upset--I have a Canon MP250 series printer. I admit it is cheap--only paid $34. for it at Wal-Mart. It prints articles from the internet with no problem--pictures come out great. But when I print pictures of my grandkids from the computer they come out to light. Its not the kind of fabric sheets I use--June Taylor--because it prints out exactly the same way on printer paper. I've tried adjusting the color on the printer but that didn't work. I tried editing the picture but that didn't help either. It definitely is the printer.
I would like to invest in a good printer but don't know which brand to buy. I would appreciate any suggestions you have.

There's a whole Yahoo group on this topic:
inkjetfabricprinting
I haven't researched printers in a long time, so I'm sure I couldn't tell you anything about the printer models that are currently available. The Yahoo group should have more up to date answers.

In a nutshell, though, there are two kinds of inkjet ink. Dye-based and Pigment-based. Both can work for printing on fabric, but with dye-based ink you must use pre-treated fabric (purchased already treated or treat yourself with something like Bubble Jet Set). Using dye-based ink on untreated fabric will seem to work but will not be colorfast. With pigment-based the fabric does not need to be treated.

Last I knew, all HP printers were dye-based and most Epson printers were pigment based. I have a wide-format Epson printer which I'm sure isn't available any more bought specifically for printing on fabric. At the time the Epson pigment inks were considered among the best for printing on fabric. I haven't researched the other brands.

Edited to fix hyperlink... And typos sheesh fat fingers this morning

I have an older canon i9950, they may not make it any more but it's a3 and takes individual colour tanks. Prints amazing photos on fabric or paper.

You may want to adjust your DPI settings for images if you haven't done so.
150 dpi for text
300-600 dpi for pics
If they are color and you print with B&W they can be muddy looking. Open them first on the computer and adjust the saturation, contrast and color. I think you did that.
You are right- different printers handle things differently.
I have had good luck with Brother. Have had Cannon and Epson in past but I have never used them for fabric.

Thank you all for your answers to my problem. I did go to the website listed and will take time to read it. I will work on the dpi. Sorry it took so long to get back to this site--been busy. Again, I want to thank you all for taking the time to answer. Janis
