I currently have a Babylock Imagine and it is a really nice machine. I've not had any problems with it, but every so many years I like to get something new.

I have a separate Coverstitch machine already (Janome 1000CPX) so I don't need that feature on my serger, thus I am looking at the Juki 654 and 734 (both 2/3/4 stitch machines).

The differences between these 2 machines are so slim. So my question is...do the Juki 543 and 734 do the same stitches as the Babylock Imagine?

Thank you,
Stephanie in PA

I have sewn on both. The 654 wins hands down.

Why do you recommend the 654 over the 734?

The 734 was "fiddly"--had a hard time getting the tension right. The threading paths are concealed somewhat and I like to see where my thread is (or is not). The 734 made a yucky roilled hem where the 654 was much better. The 654 sounds better and is cheaper so...

My 734 is great. Amazing rolled hem and not fiddly at all. It took me a while to get used to having to vary the differential and presser foot pressure because my old Pfaff just took anything I shoved under the foot without having to vary much at all. I am more and more pleased with my 734 as time goes on. I think the difference in the two machines is not in the quality of the stitch but more in a few added conveniences in the 734. I do like the lay in threading because the thread path is concealed and not so prone to getting dusty. It also has a needle threader which is great once you get the hang of it. The knob to adjust the cutting width is on the front of the machine and you don't have to open the door to adjust. In the end I think either machine will serve the purpose.

Why not pull down both manuals and go through it page by page.
You have the experience of being a serger owner so you should get a feel of how good each machine is. Otherwise look up youtube and watch a video..
