I have 2 1630's bought in early 90's. One of them keeps going to the default screen and won't stitch. The other just quit stitching after a needle change and brush out of lint. This last one just did a whole quilt and suddenly the needle arm won't go up or down. Shuttle turns with bobbin in. I have had these two machines serviced and re-serviced Has anyone else had trouble like this?

I have one I brought a few years ago that was in mint condition. Nice machine you can get them repaired if you repair person has access to reconditioned boards. But you'll have to take to a Bernina dealer. the first sounds like a board problem the second a mechanical one.

That generation of machines (not just the 1630) has a problem with the needlebar getting stuck after many years. The non-technical explanation is that basically some gunk gets hard over the years, and it won't move. It happened to my 1130. The best prevention is to run the basting stitch for a few minutes, once a month. Any certified Bernina tech will know what to do for that, as it is a known issue.
