This word peplum keep popping up in patterns of late and I have no idea what it is. And looking at the patterns doesn't seem to give much clue, other than that it's something you find on tops... So can someone explain to me what it is?

Picture a dress, seamed at the waist, with a full-ish skirt. Now cut off all but about 6 inches of the skirt--and you have a peplum. It was a very popular jacket style in the 40s and 50s.

Aha! OK, so it's like a flarey-out bit at the hip, then? Thank you!

We did a write up about Peplums in our Tracings newsletter last year. You might find that interesting.

Many, many years ago there was a plot line on Coronation Street about someone wanting a peplum on a dress or suit. If it weren't for that, I too, would be clueless!

It is like what is on this Vogue pattern: Peplum Simplicity and New Look have new patterns with a peplum too (sorry I didn't look them up). Never be embarrassed because you do't know something-none of us know everything

Its a flappy bit attached to a top that either hides your excess curves, or vividly enhances them, usually the opposite of whichever you want it to do ;o)
