Have to vent following my experience. Took my Viking to dealer for service. In discussion re machine I used at recent quilting retreat, Brother CS6000i, dealer pointed out deal he had going with Brother Simplicity SB 3129. His sign indicated a MSRP of $659 with a $160 trade-in allowance for a price of $499. Really liked looks of machine and with hubby's encouragement, walked out of shop with it--unusual for me as I usually research before buying. When home got on-line to check the machine out and found on consumer digest and you tube a review as well as a MSRP of $459 (this model is one of Brother retail store sales only models and as usual very secretive with pricing). I was very upset with "my deal" and, in fact, returned the machine the next day. My point is I'm really tired of this pricing game when it comes to buying sewing machines and what good is MSRP??!! Guess any a dealer can set any price they want!! Thanks for letting me get this out!!

I am not sure how it works in the sewing machine industry, but I did work in the baby furniture industry for a baby furniture manufacturer. We were extremely careful with our authorized dealers. If anyone quoted a MSRP that was incorrect we would pull the line from them for miss-representing our product. It can't hurt to write an email to Brother and let them know your experience. Trust me, there is a reason the MSRP is put out there. Manufacturers don't just make up these numbers and release them for no reason at all. They do it as a baseline for the customers. What that "authorized dealer" did was extremely underhanded. Manufacturers like Brother want you buying their machine just as much as you want to buy their machine, they do not want you having a hard time purchasing it and things like sewing machines are very hard to buy sight unseen online, they need good and trustworthy authorized dealers... complain!

It's too bad that dealer is stuck in the 20th century - he's not going to survive long with pricing tactics like that because consumers are too educated, and have smartphones in their hands on the spot.

When I bought my last machine, I looked up the prices online on my smartphone, which is how I got the dealer to throw in a 5-yr warranty. I sell major appliances for a living, and many people now spend more time browsing their phones or tablets in the store than they do talking to me. Since I price-match, I always offer to look up the prices (and reviews) online for them, or they can use my desktop if they prefer.

Can't believe that dealer thinks he can get away with selling for more than MSRP.

Could not agree more! It's the reason I stopped buying retail and will only buy online where I can compare prices. I find it reprehensible that manufacturers are more loyal to their dealers than they are to their consumers. Haven't you noticed that the MSRP is always hundreds below what you see advertised online?

When I was shopping for a Janome 6600P the local dealer told me it was $1600, only if I traded in my Viking 400 with it. I ended up buying the machine online for $1200 and I didn't have to trade in anything.

I'm all for retailers making a profit but $400 on top of whatever the normal dealer markup?

Good for you on returning the machine! We don't have to accept that kind of shady dealing.

Hope you find a good dealer that takes care of you and your machine(s)!
