I would like to find a good reliable pattern for a Chanel jacket. I have my eye on a beautiful piece of Donna Karen fabric and I don't want to screw it up so I need to find a reliable one that goes together well with good instructions. I am mostly an intermediate skill sewist but I did take a college level tailoring course years ago and have made a coat. Would appreciate input.

You can start by reading this blog, where a number of people have step by step photographs of their Chanel jackets.

Go Chanel or Go Home

There is a Vogue pattern 7975 which has the princess seams and round neckline.

There is Vogue 8804 Which has couture techniques and a three piece sleeve.

There are also some OOP patterns, and other threads on PR if you do a search for them. You can start by reading the reviews for the patterns to get a feel for how everyone got along with them.

I forgot to mention one critical thing, what ever pattern you choose, the only way to get a really good fit is to make a muslin of the pattern first. That way you don't risk "the good stuff" and you can evaluate if the Chanel jacket is a style that you really like.

The wonderful Ann Rowley has a picture set on Flickr that shows how she made Vogue 8804 ( the Claire Schaeffer pattern). Her comments are really helpful and the pictures really show clearly how to put the jacket together perfectly. I keep going back to look at them while I pluck up the courage to buy some Linton Tweed and make a start.

I've always wondered what makes a Chanel Jacket a "Chanel". Is it a "style"? The ones I've seen are boxy with high rounded neck lines. What's the attraction with this style of jacket? I have quite a few patterns(I bought because I liked another garment in the pattern) with this type of cut and avoid them because of the high round neck. Do all Chanel's have the rounded neck line?

Thank you all so much. I realize in reading the post this AM that I misspelled Donna KARAN. So sorry. Yes, I like the style. It is attractive on me.

Chanel makes all sorts of necklines but the iconic jacket has the high round neckline.

It's a classic, timeless design. Lagerfeld may tweak the neckline or place the pockets differently but it has stood the test of time and looks great with a pair of jeans as well as a matching couture skirt. A google search in images will show you how this timeless design, so comfortable to wear, is stylishly worn by the young and hip as well as ladies who lunch.
