Usually I make wedding gowns, MOB dresses, and other types of formal wear dresses. But recently I was asked if I would be interested in creating something a bit different. This woman is a professional WingWalker/performer in airshows all over the world. Next year she will be getting married -while she and her husband to be are wingwalking! You can check her out on her facebook page - Jane Wicker Airshows.
Anyway - she is needing an outfit that is really more of a full length spandex suit that is wedding themed. She would also like to incorporate the 1920's era of Flight and fashion. Nothing very flowy as it could get caught up in the airplanes fly wires. I've come up with a few ideas, but as I have worked very little with spandex before, I am looking for any help I can get! I've been looking for some beaded stretch lace and am having a hard time finding it - atleast in white or ivory. So I am hoping some of you athletic wear seamstresses out there will have some great suggestions for me!

Jalie has a lot of patterns for bodysuits, skating costumes, etc. that would serve well for a basic pattern. Mixing the 20's and nothing flowy is going to be tricky at best, since they didn't have spandex then. I'll have to think on that one.

I could see where beaded stretch lace may be hard to find. Stretch sequins are easier, and may be more visible from the air. Hand beading/sequining may be in your future. There's also foiled spandex that looks very shiny (think lucador) but in small amounts (in a seam?) may be a good accent.

Jalie has a pattern for a "flapper skating dress" -- Jalie 2789

Jalie also has a unitard and a skinsuit pattern.

You can also check out Kwik Sew patterns for unitard/bodysuit patterns.

You can find a good selection of stretch laces at Spandex House, Spandex World and Stretch House. I tend to do all my own beading/stoning although have used some stretch laces with sequins in the past.

Also beware that white and ivory nylon spandex can appear very sheer -- be prepared to line at least the key areas.

Keep us posted on your ideas and progress. I love working on unique, one-of-a-kind projects -- it really keeps the creative juices flowing.

Thankyou ladies for your info! I have one of the Jalie patterns for a Drum Majorette outfit I make every year for the local HIgh school. It is a basic full length body suit with variations. But I love the Roaring 20's one! Right now I am waiting to hear back from her on some of the idea's I sent her. I like to be fully prepared before I start on such a unique project as this!

Have you considered making something like the Jalie skating dress or a unitard for the ceremony (wing walking), with something to slip on over it for the party afterwards? Maybe Folkwear's Monte Carlo dress... made out of lace or a semi-sheer beaded silk.

Thankyou andye,
yes this was my friend and client. She was so excited about what we had planned. It is going to be a while before I am over this. She lived a full exciting life full of passion that she shared with others. I have many friends in the airshow business (my husband is a performer also), and over the years, have lost several. It never gets easier. She died doing what she loved, and that helps. I wrote a blog post dedicated to her
