Pfaff machines to avoid?

I am going to visit a Pfaff dealership near my mother's house today. Are there any machines I should avoid? I was pushed pretty hard toward a Quilting Expressions 4 at a different dealership, but apparently according to some reviews here that machine has issues. What is the best Pfaff for a garment sewer who may dabble in other things (quilting, potentially embroidery)? I am probably going to buy a Bernina 580 but am trying to talk myself out of paying that much.

Check this one out. Sewing, somewhere between a Creative Performance and an Xpression 4.0:

Pfaff Performance 5.0

The Creative Performance does seem very well loved but ins a different price category. I think the new 4.2 (vs 4.0) is a feature rich well priced machine that I'd be happy to use for all those things, and much better lighting than its predecessor.

I'd be checking out that Performance 5.0 if I were shopping!
It really has the good looks and features I like.

I would say the Pfaff Creative Performance if you think that you might be interested in Embroidery too in the future.
Fantastic machine I've got it and love it.
If you are only interested in sewing and quilting then the new Pfaff Performance 5.0 (no embroidery here) or the Expression 4.2.
I would stay away as far as possible from the Expression 4.0
I had one and it was not a good machine for me.

Is the Expression 4.0 even sold anymore? I think the 4.2 took its place.

I saw the creative 3 and creative performance today. Both were awfully nice machines but seemed a bit loud. Now I am torn.

Yes here in Europe the Pfaff Expression 4.0 is still being sold.

Yes my Pfaffs are noisier in sewing than my juki f600. The Juki is surely the quietest machine I have ever had.

So, I have a QE4 which I bought last year, fully aware of the problems it's had. The original bugbear, which was thread bouncing out of the take up lever and causing looping on the reverse side, is definitely fixed and gone.

However... When I got it, it seemed really quite picky - if I changed the thread or the bobbin it would often require a certain amount of, we'll, faffing about with rethreading and reseating the bobbin before it would sew nicely. I had no idea if this was normal for a computerised machine - it was my first.

After a few weeks the upper tension unit (the little button thing on top) failed completely. It was replaced by an upgraded unit by my lovely dealer and the machine has been perfect ever since. All the little issues with tension and pickiness went away and it became easy and good-natured. But here's the thing - in my opinion the tension unit was never right from day one. It is now. My dealer knew it could be a problem sometimes and had the parts on hand - but Pfaff were evidently still shipping machines which might have a defective unit, even after everything that's been said and done about the QE4 over a couple of years.

But this is by no means behaviour unique to Pfaff - there are known issues with the current crop of Berninas, for example, which are still being supplied. I think it's just the way business operates these days, from cars to sewing machines.

My opinion is - I like my Pfaff QE4 very much, it sews beautifully now and does everything I ask of it. In terms of problems, I returned it once under warranty and it was fixed with no hassle. Many people will have returned their new machines (Pfaff and other brands) at least once and thought nothing of it - it really depends on the quality of the dealer response; a simple fix could be a nightmare in the wrong hands.

Would I buy another Pfaff? Absolutely, I've just taken delivery of a mechanical select 4 which is lovely to sew on. Would I buy another QE4? Maybe not - if the new performance 5 really does have the box feed of the creative performance then I would be tempted to stretch my budget, as the only thing I think is slightly disappointing is the quality of the feed on the QE4. It's not awful, it's just not as sublime as that of the CP is reported to be!
